S-DEV Geneva 05 : A rendez-vous in Geneva for innovating cities from all over the world

Sustainable urban development is one of the great challenges of the 21st century. Actors from all over the world - local authorities, business, NGOs, international agencies - will come together at S-DEV Geneva from 11 to 13 October 2005 at GENEVA PALEXPO. An annual interactive event for the discovery and exchange of concrete developments.

«Green cities - plan for the planet!» - this slogan of the World Environment Day, 5 June 2005, has all the elements of a challenge. The 21st century is going to be more urban than we have ever known. By 2050 two-thirds of the world population, that is to say 6 billion people, will live in the cities, as against half the population in 2007 and a third in 1950. Dozens of mega-cities will have more than 10 million inhabitants. The hazards are enormous: ecological deterioration, social breakdown, violence, dehumanisation. Fortunately, though, remedies are at hand: sustainable technologies, active citizenship, new governance, corporate responsibility. Between 11 and 13 October at GENEVA PALEXPO, 26 cities will present their concrete efforts to ensure that city life offers an opportunity, rather than becoming an open wound.

This forum, which is designed to be an annual event, expects to bring together over 1500 participants. They will include mayors, the heads of public utilities or foundations, entrepreneurs, research workers, experts, and more … not to speak of surprise guests. S-DEV Geneva 05 - Innovating cities around the world is an international platform on sustainable urban development offering opportunities at multiple levels: presentation of projects, offers of products or services, sources of finance, partnerships, North-South cooperation, broadening of networks.

26 cities of all sizes, regions and systems

The 26 cities that will present pulsating innovations at S-DEV Geneva 05 are representative of all the continents and types of development (less advanced, emerging, communist, ex-communist, industrialized): Autlan (Mexico), Basel (Switzerland), Bobigny (France), Bogota (Colombia), Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Curitiba (Brazil), Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), Geneva (Switzerland), Goa (India), Irbid (Jordania), Karachi (Pakistan), Kunming (China), Koudougou (Burkina Faso), Havana (Cuba), Lleida (Spain), Moscou (Russia), Mumbai (India), Nam Dinh (Vietnam), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Rosario (Argentina), Rufisque (Senegal), Uzice (Serbia), Vancouver (Canada), Växjö (Sweden), Vienna (Austria), Zurich (Switzerland)

Urbanization facts
While the explosion of mega-cities is spectacularly striking, three quarters of population growth will in fact be concentrated in the medium-sized or secondary towns and cities.
